With nearly 4,000 Financial Consultants operating in 196 offices in 35 countries, Merrill Lynch's International Private Client Group plays an essential role in delivering a full range of wealth management services to clients in every major global market.

Bar graphSince 1995 revenues have climbed steadily, rising to $1.8 billion in 1999. Last year alone, international client assets grew by 40%, to $137 billion. From Europe to Asia and Australia, from Latin America to the Middle East, we are helping clients - particularly high-net-worth individuals - build wealth and achieve their financial goals. Working with Merrill Lynch's Asset Management and Corporate and Institutional Client groups around the world, we are able to tailor our products and services to the specific needs of our clients. In addition, our International Private Wealth Services Group works with international FCs - and with our global bank and trust services, including Merrill Lynch Bank Suisse - to ensure truly comprehensive private banking services for high-net-worth clients.

In Japan, Merrill Lynch is literally reshaping the financial services industry, with $12 billion in client assets in 67,000 accounts, with new client assets accumulating at a rapid rate. And we are now the third-largest Private Client firm in Canada, with $33 billion in client assets managed in 112 branches.

As part of our drive to offer clients the most robust range of investing and wealth-building tools, in 1999 we launched a fee-based product for international clients actively involved in their day-to-day finances. And using Merrill Lynch OnLine International, clients are able to retrieve account information, review Merrill Lynch research, access market data and communicate with their FCs. The next step will be international online trading where local regulations permit.

Worldwide, 6 million people hold assets of $1 million or more. Within five years, the value of these assets will exceed $33 trillion. We are seeing an unprecedented expansion of global wealth driven by economic prosperity, with earned wealth increasing faster than inherited wealth. Ever-more-sophisticated investors have more choices in managing their financial lives - and are looking to their advisors to help navigate the waves of change.

New opportunities are increasingly available to institutions serving these clients. Technology, in particular, is revolutionizing the private banking industry. Data-mining techniques allow more tailored services. The Internet offers numerous opportunities to interact with clients. These are the trends that will continue to reshape the International Private Client Group, and our clients' opportunities.



Team

The rapid growth of our retail business in Japan - $10 trillion in household savings with its - has resulted in enormous operating leverage for Merrill Lynch. Last year, we became the first non-domestic bank to underwrite a domestic equity offering distributed solely in Japan, when we raised $588 million for a Japanese apparel chain, Fast Retailing. Our securities research in combination with our powerful domestic Private Client distribution capabilities were the main factors in gaining this mandate. Indeed, as is typical with many Japanese equity offerings, almost 60% of the Fast Retailing shares were placed with retail investors. Clearly, the success of our retail business in Japan plays an enormous part in the success of the entire Merrill Lynch franchise in Japan.
